Biomimetic dentistry is not traditional dentistry. Did you know that traditional fillings and crowns are not included in the biomimetic protocol? For example, traditional tooth preparation for a crown removes 70% of tooth structure to make room for the porcelain. This aggressive approach is not what we want for a tooth. However, a minimally invasive procedure like an inlay, onlay or overlay will preserve the good tooth structure and restore it to its natural form and function.
Biomimetic dentistry considers the physical properties of the materials used so that they function like the natural tooth when they are bonded. One restorative solution we recommend is called stress-reduced direct composites. These are often performed when patients are unable to afford inlays or onlays, providing them with an affordable and extremely high-quality restoration. Sometimes polyethylene fibers are incorporated into these restorations to make them even stronger.
Not all dentistry is the same. If you were told you needed a crown or a filling to restore a tooth, we would love to give you a second opinion.
